In my opinion, they should just not have the icons there, and no preference to enable them; they don't really add enough to make up for what they take away, in terms of making the menu look non-standard. Icons in mac menus are pretty much unheard of, especially given the way that they prevent the menu items lining up with each other. If you could get rid of those, it would look a lot better.
